XBLA Review: Retro City Rampage

RCR_header

In Retro City Rampage, players take control of a henchman of a major crime syndicate known as the Jester. The game is inspired by Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto games, in that the player can complete a variety of missions within an enormous city that is open to explore. There will be around 50 story missions and 30 challenge levels in total.[3] Gameplay elements shared with GTA include the vast assortment of weaponry, the miscellaneous shops, the ability to hijack vehicles, and the ability to attract police attention with violence and destruction.

As an homage to numerous 8-bit videogames, Retro City Rampage incorporates design elements from a lot of different genres. Although it is primarily played from a top-down bird’s-eye viewpoint, in specific sections, it may switch to a strictly two-dimensional perspective in the style of a 2D platformer.
The game also features 16 graphical filters that simulate various retro computers and game consoles.
The game also includes a Free Roaming Mode, to freely explore the city and cause as much chaos as you can. This mode can also be played with unlockable characters from other indie developed games: like Super Meat Boy, Commander Video from the Bit.Trip series, ‘Splosion Man & Ms. Splosion Man, the main character from Minecraft and more.

This game brings back all the retro feelings of a NES game which is just drop dead gorgeous to be honest. I love the gameplay and how it plays like a GTA game if all we still had was a NES system still. The most amazing part about this game is all the references to the 80s pop culture which is my time period! From Ninja Turtles to Back to the Future, they all make an appearance in some way.

There isn’t really anything else to say about this soon to be classic game other then this has been the most fun I have had playing a XBLA game in a really really long time. Retro City Rampage has been on my most wanted to play game since screenshots came out for it and it did not disappointing. If you haven’t picked up this game yet then I really don’t know what to say to you.
